One NES frame is about 0.0166s. Most levels lock to 21-frame "framerule" boundaries, but the final level does not, so records now fall a frame or two at a time, and every frame the record drops pays out.
In 1985, Super Mario Bros.® shipped with the Nintendo Entertainment System and showed the world what a video game could be. Forty years later it is still the game almost anyone can picture from memory: run to the right, clear the gap, grab the flagpole. That universal familiarity is exactly what makes its speedrun so gripping. Everyone understands the goal, and everyone can feel how absurdly hard it has become to do it any faster.
The "Any%" category means finishing the game as fast as physically possible, warps and all. It has been chipped away for well over a decade, one frame at a time, where a frame is just one sixtieth of a second. The run is now so refined that the entire world record is a five-minute string of near-flawless, frame-perfect inputs.
Today the gap between the human world record and a tool-assisted run, a computer playing every input perfectly, is about six frames. A fraction of a second, spread across five minutes of play. Closing it means a person matching a machine, beat for beat. It is the four-minute mile of Super Mario Bros., and the first runner to reach the tool-assisted time will have played one of history's most famous games about as perfectly as the hardware allows.
